Finally spring is here and as Minnesotans it never seems to come soon enough. It’s lake season! Which means that many of you are cleaning out your cabin, your boat or pontoon. Something that you may not be thinking about with goals of catching fish and some rays of sunshine is Rodenticide. Did you put mouse/rat poison in your cabin or garage last fall when the days of summer came to an end? Maybe your neighbor did. If you are renting a cabin check with them when booking to make sure there isn’t any poison that has been put out where your furry family member would have access to it.
There are 2 kinds of poison around – the first one is no longer available, but it doesn’t mean that it is not out there. Is causes your pet’s blood to keep from clotting and if caught in time we are able to treat your pet with Vitamin K. The newest kind out there being sold in stores and is made to kill by making the brain swell. Yes, you heard that BRAIN SWELLING! You have a very small window in which we can get your pet to vomit this up and monitor them closely before prayer is the only hope you have. It is a horrible poison that we in the Veterinary profession wish they would have never made.
Color may vary, but deadliness does not!
Here is an important resource for any pet owner. These folks are amazing at what they do.
Just kidding – we like to see your pet just drop in for a pet and treat. If you do need to bring your pet to any veterinarian for care please remember to bring the package so that they know what kind of poison they are dealing with. This is extremely important. Like sunscreen, lifejackets and fun in the sun!
